As I near the summit of my PhD climb, I have begun to reflect on the course of my scientific interests starting from basic questions of fungal interactions to now — where the potential applications of fungi seem limitless.
The latter perspective is fueled by a sort of fungal renaissance that has taken hold in recent years: mycelia-based textiles and building materials, unexplored chemical diversity, novel therapeutics, and the growing appreciation for their ecological roles have vaulted these strange creatures from lowly soil dwellers, to billion-dollar tycoons. I hope this blog serves to contextualize this renaissance by appreciating the forgotten contributions of fungi to humanity. From this anchor, I aim to ‘evangelize’ the fungal renaissance and provide some insight as to where the mycelia is going.
Welcome — to Fungal Futures!
